so would guess this sketchbook dates to 1860 or so

as I think this looks like more like a woman--so let's say it could be read right side up or upside down

13/16" across at openings (fits a standard taper)

because I can't get enough of these

and will buy others if I find them as I think they're excellent

And with more diagonal than straight lines etched into the lower half of the slate on the H side, which I find very beautiful. And quite poetically, the hole for hanging at top center wore all the way through, so another was made just below it. Gorgeous patina
