The strips were drawn on paper by passing it under a wooden trough with holes or slits in the bottom. These striped wallpapers typically feature a brushed finish, which was later replaced in the 19th century by a flatter roll print, as in the wallpapers shown here. The restrained size of this particular stripe pattern is offset by
